TURNERS FALLS — It was another successful meet for the Turners Falls swim team on Tuesday.
Hosting Chicopee, both the Thunder boys and girls cruised to victories, the Turners boys walking away with a 78-7 triumph while the Thunder girls earned a 62-30 win.
With a large team that has improved throughout the season, Turners coach Abby Heathwaite said she’s proud of the progress her swimmers have made from the start of the season to today, noting how strong the team vibes are.
“It’s been going great,” Heathwaite said. “The kids are amazing. I said earlier in the season this team is the best team I could possibly ask for. They’re so supportive of each other, they’re great with me. We never have any drama. You’d think there would be rivalries within the team with the different schools and having kids ranging from sixth grade to seniors in high school but there isn’t. They’re so great and I love them.”
The success is all been about the hard work the Thunder swimmers have put in thus far. In her first year coaching, Heatwaite has pushed her young team hard during practices and the results are showing in the pool during meets.
“I thought some of them would burn out,” Heathwaite said. “I did the calculations earlier and from the preseason today they’ve swam 137,000 yards. We’ve had 21 practices where they average 5,000 to 6,000 yards per day. I’m killing them. For sixth graders, I wasn’t doing that. They’re so happy doing it and they’re times are all improving.”
Against the Pacers on Tuesday, William Tyler, Malcolm Tyler, Liam Bliss and Tyler Galenski opened with a victory in the boys 200 medley relay with a time of two minutes, 9.93 seconds and later the same four added a win in the 400 free (4:14).
Malcolm Tyler went on to win the 200 free (2:24.99) and the 100 free (1:03.97), William Tyler finished in first in the 200 IM (2:46.87) while Galenski won the 50 free (29.47).
