H.S. Roundup: Turners volleyball secures Northern League title with win over Greenfield

The Northern League volleyball championship title is Powertown-bound.

Turners Falls entered Thursday’s showdown against rival Greenfield needing to win one of its final two Northern League contests to secure the title and the Thunder did just that, walking away with a 25-4, 25-15, 25-16 sweep over the Green Wave in Turners Falls. 

Turners (13-2, 11-0) was led by Taylor Greene’s four assists and 12 aces and Madi Liimatainen’s five kills and three aces. Maddie Dietz added three assists and one ace, Ian Bastarache finished with four aces while Janelle Massey tallied two kills an four aces in the victory. 

Paloma Cruz-Lopez (six digs), Stella Verlander (three kills, four aces) and Addie Rotkiewicz (three kills, three aces) played well for Greenfield in the loss. 

Franklin Tech 3, Pioneer 2 — The Eagles looked like they were cruising to victory after going up 2-0 but the Panthers had other ideas, winning the ensuing two sets to force a fifth set to decide the winner. 

Franklin Tech regrouped and won the decider to earn a 25-16, 25-13, 23-25, 22-25, 15-8 Northern League victory in Northfield. 

Lea Chapman smashed 21 kills and nine aces while adding four digs and one block for the Eagles. Shelby O’Leary (three kills, six digs, 11 assists), Jenna Petrowicz (three aces, five kills, four digs) and Emma Petersen (three aces, five kills, four digs) contributed in the victory. 

Avery Johnson made four blocks while adding seven aces and 18 digs, Erin Killay finished with four aces and 22 digs while Aiden Wall had 19 digs, two kills and one ace for Pioneer.

Mohawk Trail 3, Mahar 0 — Palmer King recorded 10 aces and 19 assists while Emma Canaday finished with five kills and five aces as the Warriors walked away with a 25-7, 25-11, 25-20 Northern League triumph over the Senators in Buckland on Thursday. 

Sophia Goodnow (three kills, three aces), Abby Moffatt (four aces, one kill) and Maddie Consentino (four kills) helped Mohawk Trail in the win. 

Madelyn Bugress (four aces, one dig), Carly Beaton (one dig), Briana DiCato (three blocks), McKenzie Scribner (two digs) and Hayden Comeau (one kill, two aces, one dig) led Mahar in the loss. 

Girls soccer

Smith Vocational 3, Franklin Tech 0 — Monique Fredette tallied twice in the second half while Megan Courtney scored in the first half for the Vikings in an independent win over the Eagles in Turners on Thursday. 

Jayanna Daniels and Caitlin Willard tallied assists in the victory. 

Maggie Lauder made came up with 14 big saves to keep Franklin Tech off the scoreboard while Kylee Gamache came up with 10 saves for the Eagles. 

Boys soccer

Frontier 4, Wahconah 0 — The Redhawks raced out to a 3-0 lead at the half before cruising to a Moriarty League victory in South Deerfield on Thursday. 

Nico Fasulo finished with a pair of goals and assists, Rosco Palmer recorded a goal and an assist while Ian Paciorek also found the back of the net in the win. Owen Babb made four saves while Jack Cusson stopped one shot for Frontier. 

Athol 8, Hampden Charter East 2 — Blaise tossed in a hat trick while Aiden Kirwin scored a pair of goals, helping the Bears walk away with a Tri-County win on Thursday. 

Seidou, Karim Thompson and Angel Castillo also tallied for Athol, with Thompson, Blaise (2), Castillo, Elhadj and Kirwin provided the assists. 

Mahar 1, South Hadley 0 — Dom Whitman scored off an assist from Sam Connors for the Sens’ lone tally of the game, propelling them to a Moriarty League win over the Tigers in Orange. 

Tristan Gaj came up with four saves for Mahar. 

Field hockey

East Longmeadow 3, Frontier 2 — The Redhawks were unable to hand the Spartans their first loss of the season, falling in an independent contest in East Longmeadow on Thursday. 

Kate Walker and Hailey Hutkoski scored for Frontier, with Claire Kirkendall providing an assist. Kyra Richards made 15 saves in the loss. 

Franklin Tech 5, Amherst 0 — Hannah Gilbert was unstoppable on Thursday, scoring four goals in the Eagles’ County League victory over the Hurricanes in Turners.

Kait Trudeau added a goal and two assists in the win. The Franklin Tech defense did not allow a shot on goal. 

Greenfield 3, West Springfield 1 — Three different Green Wave players lit up the scoreboard on Thursday, leading to a Suburban League victory over the Terriers in West Springfield on Thursday. 

Mckenzie Boswell, Lauryn Kalinowski and Addison Harrington were those Greenfield goalscorers, with Riley Thayer providing an assist. Ainslee Flynn came up with two saves in the win. 

Greenfield held a 20-2 shot advantage and a 9-4 corner edge. 

Golf

Pioneer 169, Frontier 188 — Ben Werner and Brayden Thayer each fired a 40 for the Panthers, who earned a win over the Redhawks at Northfield Golf Course on Thursday. 

Mike Stennes (44) and Hugh Cyhowski (45) also scored for Pioneer in the win. Frontier’s Ryan Cetto was the match medalist with a 34 while Cade Allenby (49), Cam Skiffington (50) and Porter Hall (55) rounded out the Redhawk scoring.

The Thunder boasted the top three scores on the day, paced by Joey Mosca’s 35 en route to a pair decisive win on Thursday.

Reese Ewell (38) and Jack Day (39) also broke 40 for Turners Falls, and Grady Deery came through with the No. 4 score of 45.

Brady Booska set the tone with a round of 40 while Braeden Talbot (42), Gabe Mota (44) and Will Belval (44) were the other scorers for Franklin Tech, who secured a win over Ware. 

Greenfield 161, Athol 191 — Johnny Marchefka and Michael Pierce each shot a match-low 36, helping the Green Wave earn a victory over the Bears at Ellinwood Country Club on Thursday. 

Bryce Avery (43) and Conner Bergeron (43) rounded out the Greenfield scorers while Ethan Heuer (37), Dominik St. Andre (38), Brandon Adams (55) and Rafael Lopez (61) scored for Athol. 

Hampshire 165, Mohawk Trail 193 — Phineas Tuttman shot a team-low 43 for the Warriors in a loss to the Raiders at Southampton Country Club on Thursday. 

Logan Moore (45), Gage Patenaude (52) and Grady Patenaude (53) also scored for Mohawk Trail.

Field hockey

Turners Falls 8, Mahar 3 — Ledwin Villafana and Jaade Duncan both netted hat tricks, and the Thunder exploded for an eight-spot in an 8-3 Valley League win  over Mahar on Wednesday night in Orange.

Avery Tela also tallied a pair of goals in the win, as Turners scored four of its eight goals on penalty corners and led 5-0 at halftime. Goalie Conner Herzig made one save.

Mahar received goals from Ava DeJackame, Laura McGinnis and Taylor Paluk. Zoey Woodard made seven saves.
