H.S. Roundup: Turners golf defeats Greenfield to move to 8-0

The Turners Falls golf team kept their unbeaten record in tact on Thursday at Thomas Memorial. 

Taking on rival Greenfield, Thunder Joey Mosca led the way with a 36 to help Turners improve to 8-0 on the season with a 163-175 victory. 

Jackson Day (39), Darien Burnett (44) and Grady Deery (44) also scored for the Thunder while Johnny Marchefka (41), Michael Pierce (43), Bryce Avery (45) and Preston Lafleur (46) scored for Greenfield. 

Frontier 174, Amherst 203 — Ryan Cetto was the match medalist with a 38 while Cade Allenby fired a 44 to lift the Redhawks to a victory over the Hurricanes at Cherry Hill Golf Course on Thursday. 

Cam Skiffington (45) and Tyler Galenski 47) also scored for Frontier. 

Pioneer 165, Hopkins 178 — Brayden Thayer was the match medalist with a 36 while Ben Werner came in with a 41 to help the Panthers earn a win over the Golden Hawks at the Northfield Golf Course on Thursday. 

Ethan Mauthe (43) and Hugh Cyhowski (45) scored in the win. 

Girls soccer

Greenfield 1, Gateway 1 — The Gators took the lead in the first half but Green Wave Mia Snedeker found the back of the net in the second half to help an undermanned Greenfield team pick up a Bi-County League tie on Thursday in Huntington.

“To say I’m proud of this team and their effort tonight would be an understatement,” Green Wave coach Ben Johnson said. “This group as a whole showed a lot of heart. We were playing with only 10 girls on back-to-back days when we only had 11 yesterday in the heat. They could’ve made every excuse to not go out and compete but they didn’t. Couldn’t ask for a better group of girls. They laid all that they had out on the field tonight.” 

Annie Cobileanschi made eight saves for the Green Wave. 

Pioneer 5, Renaissance 2 — The Panthers took a 3-1 lead into the half and didn’t look back, with Natalie Rios and Hailey Ring each scoring a pair of goals to allow Pioneer to pick up a Bi-County League win in Springfield. 

Maddie Keefe rounded out the Pioneer scorers while Ring (2), Rios and Fota N’Diaye provided assists.

Volleyball

Turners 3, Mohawk Trail 0 — In a big Northern League showdown in Turners on Thursday the Thunder kept their unbeaten league record alive with a 25-13, 25-12, 25-15 sweep over the Warriors. 

Taylor Greene recorded 18 assists, one kill, two digs and four aces, Madi Liimatainen dished 14 assists while adding four aces and five digs, Tatianna Carr Williams smashed four kills while Maddie Dietz finished with three aces and seven digs in the win. 

Maddie Cosentino (two aces), Sophia Goodnow (three kills), Palmer King (four assists) and Emma Canaday (two kills, one block) led Mohawk Trail. 

Athol 3, Pioneer 1 — Anna Duquette led the way with seven kills and two aces to help the Bears pick up a 3-1 Northern League win over the Panthers at Mallet Gymnasium Thursday. 

Giana Vaillancourt recorded five kills and four assists, Laney Florentino had two kills, nine aces and three assists while Olivia Mayer put down three aces in the victory for Athol. 

Pope Francis 3, Greenfield 1 — Mackensie Goncalves smashed 13 kills and five aces while also making three block for the Green Wave in an independent loss to the Cardinals on Thursday in Greenfield. 

Julia Belville finished with seven kills, three blocks and four aces, Amy Mihailicenco tallied six digs, three aces and three assists while Eliza Chattman had three digs and two kills in the loss for Greenfield. 

Field hockey

Northampton 7, Mohawk Trail 2 — Naomi Den Ouden and Kylah Perras scored for the Warriors in a Valley League loss to the Blue Devils on Thursday in Northampton. 

Heidi Helenek provided an assist while Cleome Gardner made seven saves for Mohawk Trail. 

Franklin Tech 5, Holyoke 0 — Meredith Bistrick and Kait Trudeau each put home a pair of goals for the Eagles, helping them stay unbeaten with a County League victory over the Purple Knights in Turners on Thursday. 

Hannah Gilbert also tallied for Tech (9-0), with Trudeau (2), Gilbert, Kailey Steiner and Lilly Ross providing assists. The Eagles did not allow a shot on goal.
