The Greenfield and Minnechaug field hockey squads became quite familiar with one another this week. 

The Falcons picked up a 2-0 win over the Green Wave on Monday, and on Wednesday, they made the trip up to Greenfield to square off for the second time in three days. 

The Minnechaug defense did its job keeping Greenfield away from its goal, holding the Green Wave to just one shot, with Greenfield falling, 2-1, in a Suburban League contest. 

The Falcons took the lead in the second quarter but the Green Wave tied it in the final minute before the half, with Henley Gilstrap smashing a shot that deflected off a Minnechaug defender into the cage. 

The Falcons scored the game-winner with eight minutes to go in the fourth quarter. Ainslee Flynn finished with 10 saves in the loss. 

Frontier 4, Belchertown 1 — Rowan Reilly and Stella Heflin scored in the second quarter before Macy DeMaio found the back of the cage twice in the second half, lifting the Redhawks to an independent win over the Orioles in South Deerfield on Wednesday. 

Harper Modestow, Claire Kirkendall, Heflin and Ashlie Galenski provided assists while Kyra Richards made two saves in the victory. 

Boys soccer

Athol 3, Franklin Tech 1 — Blaise, Antonio Carbone and Angel Castillo found the back of the net for the Bears, leading to a Tri-County win at O’Brien Field over the Eagles on Wednesday.

The win qualifies Athol (9-1) for the Div. 5 state tournament. 

Loki Rhodes scored off an assist from Sorin Marin for Franklin Tech’s lone goal. 

Greenfield 4, Gateway 1 — The Green Wave scored twice in the first half and tacked a pair of goals on in the second half of action to pull away with a Schmid League win over the Gators in Huntington on Wednesday. 

Jacob Blanchard and Heskey Samu tallied for Greenfield in the first half, with Clivens Carter Michel and Jack Laurie tallying the assists. 

Caleb Thomas kicked off the second half with a goal off an assist from Carter Michel before Carter Michel closed out the scoring with a successful penalty kick. Liam Grahame-Lawson made seven saves in the victory. 

Granby 2, Pioneer 0 — Ty Ellis made four saves in net for the Panthers, which trailed 2-0 at halftime but couldn’t rally on Wednesday.

Granby’s Cody White and Gavin Moreno tallied first-half goals, and goalies Daniel Santiago and Jake Gagnon combined to make three saves for the clean sheet. 

Girls soccer

Mount Everett 4, Franklin Tech 1 — Emily Steuernagle scored twice and added an assist for Mount Everett, which defeated Tech in an independent contest in Turners Falls on Wednesday. 

Layla Hammond scored late off an assist from Anne Kolodziej for Tech’s lone tally. Kylee Gamache and Ariel Peters each made three saves in the loss. 

“Our energy level didn’t match theirs when we needed to,” Eagles coach Jay Butynski said. “We weren’t winning 50-50 balls. It was a disappointing effort for a team that has been giving me good efforts all season long.” 

Frontier 3, Mahar 2 — Carly Robertson scored the game-winner off an assist from Maddie Fagan in the second half, propelling the Redhawks to a Pioneer League North win over the visiting Sens. 

Maddie Bennett scored twice in the second half for Frontier, both goals assisted by Fagan. Logan Burke had both Mahar tallies, one in the first half and one in the second half. 

Jazzy Hayes made seven saves for the Redhawks while Alivia Patch came up with 11 saves for the Senators. 

Smith Academy 7, Greenfield 1 — Mia Snedeker tied the game with a first-half goal, and the Green Wave were tied 1-1 at halftime on Wednesday against the Falcons.

But Caitlin Graves (four goals) and Smith Academy exploded for six goals after intermission en route to a 7-1 victory.

Tayler Bergeron assisted on Snedeker’s goal, and Greenfield goalie Annie Cobileanschi made 18 saves.

Golf

Franklin Tech 151, Athol 181 — It was a day for low scoring at Thomas Memorial, as Franklin Tech teammates Brady Booska and Gabe Mota shared medalist honors with identical rounds of 2-under 33 to help the Eagles roll on Wednesday.

Tyler Lafountain was next for Tech with a 41, followed by Will Belval (44). Braeden Talbot (46) also played well in the win.

Ethan Heuer posted a strong round to pace Athol, shooting 4-over 39. Dominick St. Andre (45), Brandon Adams (48) and Rafael Lopez (49) were the other scoring Bears.

Northampton 149, Frontier 175 — Ryan Cetto fired a 34 at Cherry Hill Golf Course on Wednesday for the Redhawks, but Northampton’s Reilly Fowles managed to shoot a 33 to help Northampton pick up an independent win. 

Cade Allenby (42), Cam Skiffington (44) and Porter Hall (55) scored for Frontier in the defeat. 

Volleyball

Amherst 3, Frontier 0 — The Hurricanes handed the Redhawks their first 3-0 defeat in two years, as Amherst walked away with a 25-22, 25-19, 25-23 victory at Goodnow Gymnasium. 

“Amherst played very well and outplayed us in about every aspect of a volleyball match,” Frontier coach Sean MacDonald said. 

Caroline Deane recorded 10 kills and one ace, Gabby Adams put down eight kills and two aces while Allie Pierce dished 19 assists in the loss. 

Franklin Tech 3, Mahar 0 — It was a tidy performance from the Eagles, which moved to 8-5 on the season behind a 25-9, 25-11, 25-12 Northern League sweep on Wednesday.

Haleigh Benoit paced the offense with six kills, and Shelby O’Leary had a strong all-around night with four aces, four digs, two kills and six assists. Emma Petersen dropped in three aces to go with six digs for Franklin Tech.

Mahar’s Hayden Comeau put down three kills and three aces to aid the cause. Madelynn Burgess tossed out four assists to go with two aces, while Carly Beaton (three aces) and Mckenzie Scribner (four digs) were other key contributors.

Boys cross country

PVCICS 15, Mahar 49
HC West 21, Mahar 38 —
Jeff LaPlante was the top finisher for the Senators on Wednesday, crossing 10th overall in 22:51.

Josiah Cardona took 16th for Mahar, posting a time of 24:10.

Deerfield scores

The Deerfield Academy field hockey team earned a 6-0 win over NMH on Wednesday while the DA volleyball team defeated Williston, 3-0. 

Elsewhere the Big Green boys soccer team lost to Berkshire, 2-0, the DA girls soccer team fell to Williston, 3-0, and the Big Green boys water polo team fell to Choate, 13-8.
