TURNERS FALLS — The Frontier boys tennis team continued its strong start to the season on Monday against Turners Falls. 

The Redhawks swept both doubles matches and came out on top in No. 2 and No. 3 singles to walk away with a 4-1 victory over the host Thunder. The win improved Frontier to 7-1 on the season. 

The best match of the day came between Turners’ Mike Boyle and Redhawk Miles Keefe in No. 1 singles. Boyle won the opening set, 6-3, but fell behind 5-1 in the second set. Boyle rallied to win the next four games to knot things up and ultimately won the set 7-5 to earn the lone Thunder victory on the day. 

It was all Frontier otherwise. Redhawk Caiden Manning picked up a 6-2, 6-3 win in No. 2 singles over Noah Kolodziej while Ben Desmond defeated Thunder Patrick Andrews 6-0, 6-0 in No. 3 singles. 

In No. 1 doubles the Frontier pairing of Matt Sibley and Brayden Reipold walked away with a 6-0, 6-0 win over John Carmichael and Vaughn LaValley and in No. 2 doubles, River Rodrigues and Liam Ellis earned a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Max Briere and Edward Walsh. 

Boys volleyball

Athol 3, Chicopee 1 — The Bears picked up their first win of the spring on Monday, walking away with a 3-1 victory over the visiting Pacers. 

“I really have to give it to Holden Girouard and Ashan Santiago as the captains of this team,” Athol coach Nate Fisher said. “They put the team on their shoulders today and guided them to success. Colin Mason has really played well the last couple of games and the kid is dialed in. We have to use this momentum to keep moving forward. This is a great group and they have really bought into the unity us coaches preach.”

Mason finished with six aces and six kills in the win. Santiago put down four aces and one kill, Ethan Goodwin had four kills while Jesse Casillas and Logan McGrath each tallied three kills for the Bears. 

Baseball

Mahar 3, Franklin Tech 2 — The Eagles scored twice in the first inning but the Sens shut them down from there, knotting the game 2-2 heading into the seventh. 

Will Barnes reached in the top of the seventh for Mahar, stole second and made it home off an error after Morgan Softic put the ball in play. The Senators held on in the bottom of the frame to earn a Bi-County League North win in Turners Falls. 

Nate Danielson got the win on the hill for Mahar, going the distance and striking out six while allowing just three hits. Jayden Delgado and Softic each knocked doubles while Jeremy Vezina, Barnes, Matt Vitello and Danielson each had a hit for the Senators. 

Ty Sadoski, Will Ainsworth and Jack Gancarz each had a hit for Franklin Tech. 

Athol 13, Palmer 3 (6) — Leading 5-1 heading into the fifth, the Bears put four runs on the board in both the fifth and sixth innings to pull away with an independent win over the visiting Panthers on Monday. 

Logan Cormier had a big day for the Bears, tallying two doubles and a single at the plate while striking out nine on the mound. 

Eli Wein came through with three hits, Aedan Erickson tripled, Oliver Johnson doubled while Shea Brennan and Jacob Knowles each had a base hit in the victory. 

Pioneer 13, Smith Academy 2 (6) — Ian Simpson went all six innings on the mound for the Panthers, striking out six and scattering four hits as Pioneer improved to 10-0 on the season with a Bi-County League North win over the Falcons in Hatfield on Monday. 

Alex McClelland led the way at the plate for Pioneer, knocking four hits that drove in four runs. Ethan Mauthe knocked three hits, one a triple, and brought in a run, Ben Werner had three hits and an RBI, Ethan Quinn blasted an RBI triple, Simpson helped himself with two hits while Hugh Cyhowski hit safely in the victory. 

Ryan Belina, Cam Graves, Robert Slysz and Griffin Goldman each had a hit for Smith Academy. 

Softball

Franklin Tech 12, Athol 0 (5) — Hannah Gilbert shut down the Bears on Monday, as the sophomore held Athol to one hit, gave up just one walk while striking out nine as the Eagles walked away with a Franklin County League East win on Monday in Turners. 

Kendra Campbell and Keira Stevens both knocked a pair of hits and RBIs for Franklin Tech. Kylee Gamache tallied two hits and an RBI, Gianna DiSciullo had two RBIs while Lilly Ross and Cordelia Guerin each hit safely in the win. 

Jenna Bonenfant had the lone hit for Athol.
