H.S. Roundup: Angel Castillo’s hat trick leads Athol boys soccer past Duggan

The goals came fast and often for the Athol boys soccer team on Friday against Duggan. 

Angel Castillo was the top option for the Bears, as he put in a hat trick that helped the Bears cruise to an 8-0 Tri-County League victory in Athol. 

Aiden Kirwin, Elhadj, Brent Boudreau, Caunor Mason and Duli Gilmore rounded out the Bear goal scorers in the win. Kirwin, Braydon York, Castillo (2), Karim Thompson and Blaise tallied the assists. 

Pathfinder 4, Franklin Tech 1 — The Pioneers took a 3-0 lead early in the second half, leading to a 4-1 Tri-County League win over the Eagles in Turners on Friday. 

Jaxon Kotright-Clark scored an unassisted goal for Franklin Tech. 

Frontier 1, Easthampton 0 — The Redhawks drew a penalty kick in the 48th minute and Nico Fasulo buried it for the lone goal of the game, helping Frontier earn a Moriarty League win over the Eagles at Herlihy Park on Friday. 

Owen Babb came up with three saves in the victory. 

Pioneer 1, Gateway 0 — Zachary Hess did all he could give the Gators a chance, coming up with 12 big saves in goal.

It looked like the game was heading toward a scoreless shutout when Panther Gavin Gammell raced through the midfield and fed a pass to Kurt Redeker, who blasted home a shot after getting by a defender in the 72nd minute to help Pioneer earn a 1-0 Schmid League victory in Northfield. 

Field hockey

Northampton 0, Greenfield 0 — Ainslee Flynn stopped all six shots she faced for the Green Wave, though Greenfield was only able to put three shots on goal, leading to a scoreless draw in Greenfield on Friday. 

Frontier 5, West Springfield 0 — The Redhawks put 27 shots on goal against the Terriers on Friday and five made it to the back of the cage, allowing Frontier to earn a Suburban League victory in West Springfield. 

Rowan Reilly and Hailey Hutkoski each scored twice for the Redhawks while Ashley Taylor added a goal in the win. Macy DeMaio (3), Taylor and Claire Kirkendall provided the assists while Kyra Richards made four saves for Frontier. 

Golf

Pioneer 172, Turners 173 — Brayden Thayer was the match medalist with a 39, Ben Werner and Ethan Mauthe each shot a 42 while Hugh Cyhowski carded a 49, helping the Panthers hand the Thunder their first loss of the season on Friday at Northfield Golf Course. 

Joey Mosca (40), Reese Ewell (41), Jack Day (42) and Grady Deery (50) scored for Turners. 

Frontier 171, Ware 212 — Cade Allenby and Cam Skiffington tied for a match-low 40 in the Redhawks’ win over Ware at Cherry Hill Golf Course on Friday. 

Ryan Cetto (45) and Griffin Casey (46) rounded out the Frontier scorers. 

Volleyball

Franklin Tech 3, PV Christian 2 — It went five sets in Turners on Friday, with Tech picking up a win in the fourth and carrying that momentum forward to earn a 22-25, 26-24, 18-25, 26-24, 15-6 independent win. 

Lea Chapman led the way with 12 kills, 10 digs and four blocks, Kristine Given came up with 12 digs, Shelby O’Leary recorded six aces, seven digs and 13 assists, Amelia Rider put down three kills and added nine digs while Jenna Petrowicz finished with one ace, five kills, five digs and two blocks for Franklin Tech. 

Westborough 3, Frontier 0 — The Redhawks were unable to steal a set on the road against the Rangers — the No. 1 ranked team in the Div. 2 power rankings — falling 25-14, 25-9, 25-15 in Westborough. 

Caroline Deane put down five kills and made five digs, Gabby Adams recorded four kills and one ace while Allie Pierce tallied eight assists and five digs in the loss. 

SICS 3, Mahar 0 — The Bulldogs walked away with a 25-12, 25-14, 25-10 independent win over the Sens in Springfield on Friday. 

Boys cross country

Frontier 15, Mahar 50 — Fr ontier’s Evan Hedlund was the first to cross the finish line, completing the course in a time of 17 minutes, 58 seconds to help the Redhawks pick up a win over the Senators on Friday in Orange. 

Luke Howard (second, 17:58), Charles Dennis (third, 20:11),  Amory Maxey (fourth, 20:12) and Oliver Brown (fifth, 20:28) also scored for Frontier. Jeff Laplante (eighth, 21:24), Aiden Drake (ninth, 21:30), Josiah Cardona (10th, 22:10), Michael Laplante (11th, 23:41) and Solomon Burke (18th, 27:01) were the top Mahar finishers.

Four Rivers 3, Hartsbrook 1 — Cooper Whitney scored twice while Christian Dimitriou also found the back of the net to lift the Otters to a victory on Thursday.
