GREENFIELD — School Committee Chair Amy Proietti says the committee and Superintendent Jordana Harper came to an “amicable agreement” that ended Harper’s tenure as the head of Greenfield’s public schools on Friday, Feb. 19.

No other details about her departure are being released at this time.

Committee members said they wish Harper well on her future endeavors and thank her for her service.

Harper, who served as the Greenfield School Department superintendent for the past seven years, gave notice last September that she would not be renewing her contract with the school system when it ends in June. Most recently, she has been out for about a month for an injury that she said occurred while she was working.

Harper could not be reached for comment about her departure. According to Proietti, Harper told the School Committee that she was “pleased and proud to have served the children and citizens of Greenfield.”

Greenfield High School Principal Karin Patenaude and Newton Elementary School Principal Melodie Goodwin, both superintendent-licensed, had been covering for Harper for the past few weeks until the School Committee appointed Dr. Judy Houle as interim superintendent. Houle is with The Management Solutions Inc., which also provides the school system with its business manager and is providing two consultants until the School Committee hires a new superintendent.

“We are pleased to have such a capable and experienced educational leader manage the day-to-day operations of running the school system during this transition,” Proietti said. “The School Committee is quite confident our school system is in good hands while we begin our search for the next leader.”

The School Committee is currently forming a search committee and hopes to hire a new superintendent by the end of this school year — before the beginning of the next school year in September.

Houle previously served as superintendent in Belchertown and Granby. She is a former executive director of the Greenfield Commonwealth Virtual School and has served as curriculum director in three districts in Massachusetts, Connecticut and Vermont.
