GREENFIELD — With the final few candidates scheduled to be interviewed this week, the Superintendent Search Committee is aiming to present a list of finalists to the School Committee next week.

“We have some very strong people who have great ideas about helping Greenfield move forward,” Jean Wall, head of the Superintendent Search Committee, told her fellow School Committee members Wednesday night.

Former Superintendent Jordana Harper announced last September that she did not intend to renew her contract, but then came to an “amicable agreement” with the School Committee that ended her tenure on Feb. 19. Since then, Dr. Judy Houle with The Management Solutions Inc. has been serving as interim superintendent.

As of Wednesday, the Superintendent Search Committee had interviewed five out of eight candidates — all of whom are New England-based — with the rest of the interviews scheduled later this week.

“After which,” she said, “we will collaborate and choose the ones that we’re going to send forward to the School Committee.”

Wall said the search committee recommends the School Committee meet next week to receive the list of finalists so there is time to schedule site visits to the candidates’ home school districts — ideally between July 6 and July 21 — as well as site visits to Greenfield.

“Since we don’t know yet how many we’re bringing forward, I don’t know how involved that is,” she said.

Wall noted that site visits could be either in person or virtual, noting virtual visits, especially given how close it is to the end of the school year, might allow for more participation in some cases.

“We don’t want to get too far away from the end of the school year, because it’ll be important that people are still around to talk to,” she said.

Liz Lafond, who is serving as a consultant to the search committee, said it is important for the names of finalists to be made public by next week.

“Most districts will be finishing up school next week, and ideally — if we can arrange it with candidates — we’d like to start some of those site visits, even if they’re virtual, the week of the 21st so that building administrators would still be around and central office folks will be around,” Lafond said. “It gives us a window to get some teachers and students to participate in this, which is really vitally important for you to hear.”

School Committee Chair Amy Proietti agreed that timing is important, and instructed Lauren Rice, administrative assistant to the superintendent, to poll committee members on their availability for a 6 p.m. meeting either Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday next week.

“It’s important to keep it moving along,” she said.
