GREENFIELD — The city’s first recreational pot shop may open as early as this Sunday, following the final stamp of approval by the Cannabis Control Commission Wednesday.

Patriot Care already runs a medical marijuana business out of the former American Legion building, off the parking lot at the rear of Green Fields Market. Additional parking may be available across the street.

This week, following a round of local and state inspections, the Greenfield store was officially licensed to commence adult-use retail sales as early as Sunday.

Although a page on Patriot Care’s website appears to list an opening date in April, a spokesperson for the company said that reflects last year’s opening of the medical business. The spokesman said he could not say yet when recreational pot sales will begin.

When Northampton’s dispensary opened in November there were long lines in town for weeks. Easthampton’s dispensary had similar long lines.

Greenfield Mayor William Martin has said, while discussing reasons why building a new $19.5 million library will not be a burden on the taxpayer, that marijuana sales may help to alleviate some of that tax burden.

The city gets to tax the retail pot sales at 3 percent and plans to invest some of that into education, based on the city’s host agreement.

Since opening for business statewide, about $54.5 million of total sales have been generated from recreational marijuana. In the first full week of March, $4.4 million of recreational marijuana was sold with the typical person spending about $40.
