GREENFIELD — A pedestrian was hospitalized with minor injuries Monday evening after being struck by a vehicle at the intersection of Silver Street and Barr Avenue, according to Greenfield Police Sgt. Megan Cloutier.

Dispatchers received the call at 5:41 p.m., Cloutier said. Cloutier, who happened to nearby at Greenfield High School, responded to the accident. In addition to the Greenfield Police Department, the Greenfield Fire Department and EMS responded.

Cloutier said the pedestrian, a Greenfield man, “was assumed to be reasonably in the crosswalk” when he was struck by a sedan driven by a Shelburne Falls woman. She said the man was transported to Baystate Franklin Medical Center with minor injuries.

“We loaded him into the ambulance and were told that he seemed to be doing OK,” Cloutier said.

The Shelburne Falls woman, who was the sole occupant of the vehicle, received a citation. Her car’s windshield was damaged as a result of the accident.

Cloutier noted the accident likely happened because the driver didn’t see the pedestrian crossing the street. Intense glare from the sun was observed around the time of the incident, with the area of the accident particularly affected, according to Cloutier.

“We do attribute the sun glare as part of the accident as well,” she said. “And the roadway was wet from recent rain, which makes it worse.”
