GREENFIELD – Emergency crews were called shortly after 8 Tuesday morning when a high-pressure natural gas line ruptured on West Street, around the 100 block.

Berkshire Gas spokesman Christopher Farrell said the rupture happened when Greenfield DPW crews struck a 2-inch intermediate pressure gas line while they were working around it.

“As of 9:38 we were able to stop the leak, the gas was shut off – no service was interrupted,” Farrell said, noting that crews would continue working on the gas line throughout the morning.

At the scene around 9 a.m., Greenfield Fire Chief Robert Strahan said “we have a gas line that was struck by a backhoe,” noting that a perimeter was set up at West and Phillips Streets. He said there were no injuries or explosions.

Up and down the street, Berkshire Gas vehicles, town police cars, Department of Public Works trucks, and three Greenfield fire engines idled in zero degree temperatures. Three backhoes and a dump truck could also be seen.

A few blocks away on Elm Street, the scent of natural gas – an odor added by utility companies to warn people of a potential leak – was strong.

Strahan said about 15 nearby homes were evacuated as a precaution and warned people to reroute around the area for safety reasons. Strahan noted the scene was “very busy.”

Fire officials asked the Franklin Regional Transit Authority for help with the evacuations, and also notified Mayor William Martin. Eversource was also called to help out. Evacuees were were given the OK to return home just before 10 a.m.

As of 10:15 a.m., fire crews had been released from the scene.
