GREENFIELD — The search is on for a new school superintendent in Greenfield, with School Committee member Jean Wall heading up a search committee.

Superintendent Jordana Harper notified the School Committee in mid-September that she will not be renewing her contract with the Greenfield School Department when it expires at the end of June.

School Committee Chair Amy Proietti noted that the full committee will hire a firm to assist in the search.

“That’s common practice,” she said.

Proietti said the search committee will consist of School Committee members like Wall, people from the public and others who make sense to be involved.

“We’re hoping all of this happens soon,” she said. “We want the entire process to be transparent.”

Proietti said the School Committee wants to have a superintendent hired as soon as possible, especially given Harper’s impending departure and the financial issues the Greenfield School Department faces because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Harper submitted a letter written to parents, teachers, staff, students and the community, to the School Committee and the Greenfield Recorder in September saying it would be her “last year as superintendent of GPS.”

She said serving the school district was an “immense pleasure,” and she is proud of what has been accomplished during her tenure. She said she hopes there is a smooth transition in leadership as she prepares to leave. Until then, Harper said she is “deeply committed” to students and to making sure the year is a success.
