GREENFIELD — The community is invited to the Greenfield Tree Committee Nursery for the first time since its creation in 2020.

Tree Nursery Day will take place at the nursery, located at 34 Glenbrook Drive, on Saturday from noon to 4 p.m., with an open house and seedling giveaway from noon to 2 p.m. and a “Nursery Work Day” from 1 to 4 p.m.

“We’ve been spending the last couple of years building up the nursery stock, building out the infrastructure, like the shed and fencing, and that kind of stuff,” said Mary Chicoine of the Greenfield Tree Committee. “This year, of the trees we started in 2020, we anticipate donating to the city, and/or donating ourselves, about 60 of the trees. They’ll get planted in public spaces around Greenfield.”

The nursery’s creation came with the support of a U.S. Forest Service grant, according to Chicoine. She previously said the grant will help the committee reach its goal of planting 1,000 trees by 2025.

“We did plant a few [trees] last year, but this is the first big push,” she noted.

Although trees are not for sale to the general public, residents can request the Tree Committee plant one in their neighborhood.

Chicoine said the nursery has about 200 trees in production right now, with species including maples, oaks and birches, among others. On Saturday, guests will learn what systems the Tree Committee has in place at the nursery, which is located on land leased from Just Roots.

“I really appreciate the fact Just Roots is able to sublease the land they lease from the city,” Chicoine said. “It’s a nice complementary function of the nursery to have the trees there at Just Roots. I really appreciate that relationship.”
