GREENFIELD — The community is invited to Court Square on Thursday afternoon for a block party, hosted by the Greenfield Public Library.

The event will take place from 3 to 6 p.m., according to Pamela McBride of Information Services at the Greenfield Public Library.

“We’re going to have a little something for everyone,” said McBride, who organized Thursday’s block party.

McBride said there will be a book discussion at 4 p.m., where participants will discuss the books they read through the summer reading program, in the theme of “Beyond the Beaten Path.”

“We’re also going to be giving away the books we read, paperback copies of them,” she said.

At 5 p.m., there will be a reading by local author Serena Burdick. Copies of her newest book, “Find Me in Havana,” will be available for signing.

There will also be a button-making activity for children and teens, a “weird Oreo” tasting activity, sidewalk chalk and games, and a science experiment for children.

“We have some walking trail maps for local communities that we’ll be able to give away,” McBride added.

Thursday afternoon’s block party will also be the first opportunity for the community to purchase tickets for the Friends of the Greenfield Public Library’s annual “Taste of the Town.”

“We often, especially during the summer, do a lot of pop-ups … and other events, but because we don’t have meeting rooms or a lot of space, we decided it might be fun to get out for the day, especially with Court Square being available, to show everyone that we’re not just four walls,” McBride said.

McBride said she hopes to see the block party become an annual event.

“It might be something that, next summer, when we have a parking lot, we can do outside the library,” she said.

Back-to-School Backpack Swag Party

The Greenfield Public Library’s Youth Services team will also hold a Back-to-School Backpack Swag Party on Wednesday from 2 to 3:30 p.m. under the tent on the library’s front lawn. Attendees can make keychains and buttons for their backpacks. Design ideas will be available for elementary, middle and high school students.
