GREENFIELD — The Greenfield Police Department took to social media Sunday to try to identify a person believed to have stolen packages off front porches in the area of Main and Colrain streets.

The police posted an image taken by a resident’s security camera showing a man wearing a black hooded sweatshirt. Anyone with information should call the Police Department at 413-773-5411.

Greenfield Police Lt. Dan McCarthy said there are three reported thefts connected to this individual.

“We’re getting flooded with a bunch of names, so we’re kind of playing around with those at the moment,” he said early Monday afternoon.

These types of thieves — people who steal delivered packages from people’s doorsteps — are known as “porch pirates.” McCarthy said while there have previously been sporadic reports, it is important to note such thefts have never happened on a large scale locally. He said it is not surprising to hear about these cases this time of year, because many people are getting holiday shopping purchases sent to their homes.

McCarthy suggests people deter porch piracy by bringing deliveries inside as soon as possible. If you are unlikely to be home when a package arrives, he said, consider sending the delivery to a friend or neighbor’s house or possibly have the delivery employee drop it off on a back porch, out of sight from the street.
