Workshop teaches coiling with pine needles

GREENFIELD — The LAVA Center at 324 Main St. will host a workshop on the ancient art of coiling with pine needles, hosted by Marsha Leavitt, on Saturday, July 9, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Participants will learn how to coil pine needles to make a small ornament or hanging piece, after choosing a walnut slice or clay base to start. According to a LAVA Center press release, Leavitt will explain the spiral stitch, diamond stitch, open wrapping and closed wrapping. Participants will also learn how to incorporate beads.

Leavitt, who holds an undergraduate degree in home economics education from Western Michigan University and a master’s degree in education from the University of Massachusetts, is a member of the Northeast Basketmakers Guild and the National Basketry Organization. She taught basket classes in her Florence studio until the COVID-19 pandemic.

The cost of the workshop is $50 and includes materials. To register, email Leavitt at marsha3072@gmail.com.
