Three students earn black belt status

GREENFIELD — Three Franklin County residents earned black belt status after four years of training at Nam’s Taekwondo at 154 Main St.

Following the studio’s black belt promotion test, Chase and Colton Bysiewski of South Deerfield and Glenn MacNeil of Greenfield earned first-degree black belt status, according to Assistant Director and Site Coordinator Paul Choi.

Art show to hold New Year’s Eve reception

GREENFIELD — The LAVA Center at 324 Main St. is displaying a new art show, called “Rejuvenation,” by local artist David Andrews. A reception will be held Friday from 7 to 10 p.m.

Andrews, a Chicago native, calls his work a “fluid elegance turning 2D drawings into 3D pieces of sculpture on paper,” according to a LAVA Center press release. For more information, visit facebook.com/DrawingsByDavidAndrews.

LAVA Center screening faux documentary

GREENFIELD — The LAVA Center at 324 Main St. will host a screening and discussion of “The Light of the Burning Ship,” a satirical look at an alternate political history in the United States, on Thursday, Jan. 6, at 7 p.m.

Filmed in 2017, the faux documentary examines a Donald J. Trump political dynasty that spans for generations, and the initial failed attempts to halt that dynasty, according to a LAVA Center press release. Henry Mosher stars as narrator Brian Adams and Alex DeMelo plays failed revolutionary Nicholas Silva.

Monthly brown bag distribution set for Jan. 6

GREENFIELD — The Food Bank of Western Massachusetts’ monthly brown bag program for qualifying seniors will be held Thursday, Jan. 6, from 10 to 11 a.m. at the Greenfield Senior Center at 35 Pleasant St.

According to a notice from Senior Center Activities Director Kathy Dunn, seniors who receive fuel assistance, Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits or other benefits will qualify. To apply, call the Food Bank of Western Massachusetts at 413-247-9738. Applications are also on hand at the Senior Center.

‘Finding Sisters’ author coming to Senior Center

GREENFIELD — Author Rebecca Daniels will talk about her latest book, “Finding Sisters,” at the Greenfield Senior Center on Wednesday, Jan. 26, from 1 to 2 p.m.

With almost no information about her genetic heritage, adoptee Daniels follows limited clues and uses DNA testing, genealogical research, thoughtful letter writing, and a willingness to make awkward phone calls with strangers to finally find her birth parents. According to a notice from Senior Center Activities Director Kathy Dunn, Daniels will talk about the process of her genealogy search and then read a section from the book, followed by a question and answer period.

In addition to “Finding Sisters,” Daniels, a retired university professor who taught acting, directing and playwriting for 25 years, has also published “Women Stage Directors Speak” and “Keeping the Lights on for Ike.” Signed books will be available for purchase at the event.

The event is free to attend, though registration is required by calling 413-772-1517, ext. 0 or stopping by the Senior Center’s front desk.

Marine Corps League hosts monthly breakfast

GREENFIELD — The Marine Corps League Oak Ridge Detachment holds a monthly breakfast on the second Sunday of each month from 7 to 11 a.m. at the Moose Lodge, 20 School St.

According to Commandant and Web Sergeant Brian Brooks, the breakfasts cost $10 for the general public and $5 for first responders with a valid ID.
