Mythological realism author giving virtual talk

GREENFIELD — In partnership with the Library Speakers Consortium, the Greenfield Public Library invites residents to a virtual talk with Madeline Miller, bestselling author of “The Song of Achilles” and “Circe,” on Thursday, March 21, at 7 p.m.

Miller is known for writing mythological realism. Her novels reimagine stories from Greek mythology while focusing on themes that she considers timeless, like dysfunctional families and homesickness.

The “Song of Achilles,” Miller’s debut novel, set in Greece, tells the story from Patroclus’ point of view and the bond that grew between him and Achilles. “Circe,” Miller’s second novel, is a modern reimagining told from the perspective of Circe, an enchantress in Greek mythology who is featured in Homer’s “Odyssey.”

Photography on display in April

GREENFIELD — The LAVA Center at 324 Main St. will present an exhibit of Pauline Star’s photography throughout April.

Star will host an artist’s reception on Thursday, April 11, from 5 to 8 p.m. Gallery hours are Mondays, Tuesdays and Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and Thursdays and Fridays from 5 to 8 p.m.

What started as a hobby recently became a small business for Star, who has a love for colors and nature.

“I need to find time to fill my spirit with healthy things,” Star said in a statement. “One of those things I found was photography. I would wake before the sun came up and drive. I sometimes searched for the darkest dirt roads and highest peaks to get the right shots. When I looked for something to shoot with my camera (just my iPhone), I went with how it felt emotionally. I would snap a picture if I saw something that resonated with me.”

Star added that it brings her “great joy” to share her photos with the public.

“I hope these pictures and art give you a feeling of beauty and pleasure as they do for me,” she said.
