GREENFIELD — As it ramps up fundraising for the Independence Day fireworks celebration, the Recreation Department is hosting its second annual Cornhole Tournament this weekend.

“We’re hoping to build on the success of our first tournament last year by moving the event to the weekend and adding more activities,” said Recreation Director Christy Moore. “We will have something for everyone.”

The event, which is scheduled to take place on Court Square on Saturday at 3 p.m., will feature a DJ, food and beverage trucks including Pioneer Valley Brewery and Hitchcock Brewing Co., raffles and children’s activities. As of Tuesday, about 15 two-person teams had signed up, according to Moore.

“Even if you don’t play … you can come and support the event by having a drink, having some food and cheering on the teams,” she said.

The tournament serves as a fundraiser for the Independence Day fireworks.

“The more we fundraise here, the less we are trying to collect before our July celebration,” she said.

The cost each year for the fireworks comes to $18,000, according to Moore. Sponsorships for the fireworks celebration have already started to roll in, she noted.

The entry fee for the double-elimination tournament is $50 per two-person team. Players must be at least 18 years of age.
