GREENFIELD — In the wake of Health Director Jennifer Hoffman’s resignation, a search committee is being organized to begin looking for a new director.

“We’re so grateful to all of her hard work and years of service,” outgoing Board of Health Chair Alyssa Valbona said to Hoffman at a meeting on Wednesday evening. “You’ve really done so much for the city ... and we’re so grateful for that.”

Greenfield Medical Director Dr. Timothy Lepore added that “the people of Greenfield are in much better stead” because of Hoffman.

“The kind of infrastructure that you’ve put into place has really put Greenfield on great footing and will continue into the years ahead,” he said. “I think you’ve had an impression on the city of Greenfield and also the people of Greenfield, whether they’re aware of it or not, are in much better stead because of your work.”

After three years in the role, Hoffman resigned from her position, citing the “emotional toll” of constant scrutiny, harassment and verbal abuse from the public. Her last day was Oct. 20.

“I’m grateful for the opportunity,” she said Wednesday.

With Board of Health member Samantha McIver expected to take over as chair, Valbona said McIver will begin by working with the mayor’s office to form a search committee for the new director.

The Board of Health also worked out an arrangement with the Health Department — which includes two health inspectors, a public health nurse and a medical director — to divide up Hoffman’s responsibilities, such as putting together meeting agendas.

Lifelong resident Carrie Mimitz, a registered nurse who works on a per diem basis for the Greenfield School Department, is expected to be sworn in as a new Board of Health member before the next meeting. Her term will expire December 2025 to maintain staggered terms on the three-person board.

“I had the desire to work in some capacity with the town,” Mimitz told board members on Wednesday. “And this felt like a good fit.”

Valbona, meanwhile, has chosen not to seek reappointment. Her term was set to expire this month.

“I am sad to be leaving, but … also excited to hand over the role to Sam,” she said of her position as chair. “And I hope to continue working with the city and volunteering with the Health Department in a different capacity.”
