GREENFIELD — Bee Week will end on a sweet note Saturday with local honey tasting at Green Fields Market.

The tasting includes honey from Warm Colors Apiary, Shelburne Honey Company, Old Friends Farm and Honey Gardens, and will take place from noon to 3 p.m. People can also stop by from noon to 2 p.m. to have their cell phones and tablets measured for wireless radiation, which is believed to contribute to honeybee decline.

“I’m going to be measuring people’s mobile devices and giving them consultations about how to reduce their exposure,” said Jonathan Mirin of Piti Theatre, which organizes Bee Week.

He said he will use an EMS measuring device to determine the signal strength emanating from the devices. Mirin said different studies have show different detrimental effects of mobile devices on bee colonies.

“There was one Harvard study where they put cordless phones in the hives, and all the hives that had these phones in them collapsed and the hives that didn’t have phones didn’t collapse,” he said, adding, “There’s other studies where they’re correlating beekeepers who are working closer to cell towers having a higher rate of bee mortality than those who don’t.”

He said there are little steps people can take to do the pollinators — and themselves — a favor. Those include turning WiFi off at night, putting cell phones in airplane mode or powering them off when they’re not needed, and keeping them in a handbag instead of in a pocket.
