GREENFIELD — Green Fields Market is now offering a takeout window where people can either order ahead of time online or by phone, or can walk up and order.

Sarah Kanabay, outreach and communications manager for Franklin Community Co-op, which operates both Green Fields Market and McCusker’s Market in Shelburne Falls, said the co-op will continue to find ways to provide food while keeping people safe during the pandemic, especially going into the fall when cases might spike again and people might not feel safe gathering inside.

“The takeout window is right on Main Street,” Kanabay said. “It offers our customers, and others, another level of convenience.”

Additionally, patrons anxiously awaited the return of the hot and salad bars, Kanabay said. Though they are operational again, they don’t look exactly as they did. People can go inside to get their lunch or dinner, but staff members serve salad and hot bar items that are behind Plexiglas.

“Those bars were hugely popular pre-COVID,” Kanabay said. “In the short time we’ve reopened them, they seem very popular again. We also have ice cream by the scoop and a new espresso bar, so people can get a pastry and espresso or coffee at the window, pick up lunch or get an ice cream cone or sundae.”

This summer, the co-op started offering outdoor dining in the alleyway. That will continue until the weather makes it no longer feasible.

“We’ll keep the window open through the winter, though we won’t have outside dining,” Kanabay said. “We’re anticipating the colder months ahead, but want people to still be able to enjoy some sort of restaurant experience, even if they take their food home or back to work.”

People can still pick up pre-packaged sandwiches, pizza, soup and salads inside, as has been the case throughout the pandemic, but they now can also get made-to-order items, as well, Kanabay added.

“Every business is trying to come up with creative approaches to keep them going,” she said. “We’re doing the same. That’s why we started the outdoor dining area. It was done out of necessity, to give diners a more pleasurable experience. The store isn’t big enough to have safe, distanced dining.”

Kanabay said the co-op will continue to “pivot” as needed.

“We’re so excited to be able to offer this new format,” she said.
