GILL — For the sixth consecutive year, members of the Thomas Memorial Golf & Country Club in Turners Falls and the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office TRIAD Program gathered to assemble 150 boxes of food for people in need on Monday — albeit in a new venue for the first time.

Volunteers convened at the Schuetzen Verein at 55 Barton Cove Road to pack up the fixings for Thanksgiving meals to be distributed to Franklin County families in time for the holiday. Money to support the effort is raised through the Feed the Families golf tournament, which Chet Czernich organizes at Thomas Memorial. Ray Zukowski, a supervisor with TRIAD, secured a spot at the Schuetzen Verein to assemble the boxes because the golf course was occupied.

“We’ve got a lot of room, a lot of help,” he said.

Czernich said each box contains a frozen turkey as well as a Table Talk pie, cranberry sauce, canned vegetables, dinner rolls, gravy, and fresh onions and squash. He and his wife, Charlene, drove to the Table Talk factory in Worcester to pick up the donated pies, as they have the past handful of years.

The turkeys and some of the vegetables were donated by the Walmart Supercenter in Hinsdale, New Hampshire. Jim and Loretta Graves in Shelburne donated 300 pounds of onions and the squash comes from Joe Czajkowski Farm in Hadley.

Seventy-five boxes were to be given to the Greenfield Salvation Army, which will disseminate them to families in need. TRIAD will take care of the remaining 75 boxes.

Czernich said the volunteers worked like a well-oiled machine on Monday morning at the secluded spot near the Connecticut River. The effort, which started with just 35 boxes six years ago, quickly jumped to 100 before reaching 150 in the past few years.
