GILL — Three faculty members at the Gill Elementary School presented on project-based learning at the Massachusetts School Administrators Association summer institute.

Principal Conor Driscoll said it was his first time attending and presenting at the gathering. Driscoll and team leaders kindergarten teacher Kelly Gobeil and third-grade teacher Lori Rinaldi attended the on July 26 event.

Driscoll said last year, the school implemented a project-based learning program, including professional development for faculty.

There was a push from a number of people, including teachers who wanted to implement the projects and parents who wanted more hands-on learning, according to Driscoll.

“This is working to make education relevant. Students can see what they’re doing,” Driscoll said.

Projects included creating Rube Goldberg machines, campaigning to save the rainforest and visiting a vernal pool near the school.

“We learned and reflect as the process goes forward. The team leaders do a good job,” Driscoll said.

The school is going to continue to use project-based learning this upcoming academic year. Options for new projects include using new raised-bed gardens that were installed by Franklin County Technical School students in the beginning of the summer.

“It’s applicable and hands-on. They can see what they’re learning,” Driscoll said. “This learning has an impact that is empowering for children.”
