The Garden Cinemas is holding a month-long film festival to celebrate the life and work of renowned American director Martin Scorsese. The theater will screen 14 movies directed by Scorsese throughout September.
Scorsese is best known for his work focused on the American gangster, but also notably covers themes of religion, violence and machismo. He often collaborates with the same actors repeatedly, most notably Robert DeNiro and Leonardo DiCaprio.
“I can’t decide what I want to see the most — Daniel Day Lewis playing Bill the Butcher in ‘Gangs of New York,’ Ray Romano as Bill Buffalo in ‘The Irishman’ or Joe Pesci as Tommy Devito in ‘Goodfellas,’” Garden Cinemas co-owner Isaac Mass said in a statement. “All the characters are so well developed, these movies are like a pizza with the works.”
Scorsese films playing at the Garden include: “Bringing Out the Dead” (1999) on Sept. 1, “Casino” (1995) on Sept. 5, “Raging Bull” (1980) on Sept. 7, “Shutter Island” (2010) on Sept. 8, “Cape Fear” (1991) on Sept. 12, “Mean Streets” (1973) on Sept. 14, “Age of Innocence” (1993) on Sept. 15, “The Wolf of Wall Street” (2013) on Sept. 19, “The Departed” (2006) on Sept. 21, “The Irishman” (2019) on Sept. 22, “Hugo” (2011) on Sept. 24 (matinee), “Gangs of New York” (2002) on Sept. 26, “Taxi Driver” (1976) on Sept. 28 and “Goodfellas” (1990) on Sept. 29.
The film festival is sponsored by TD Bank and the Massachusetts Cultural Council through the auspices of the Greenfield Crossroads Cultural District Committee.
Tickets are $10.50 for adults and $8.50 for seniors, students and veterans, as well as for the “Hugo” matinee.
