GREENFIELD — A garage at 46 Fairview St. burned to the ground Saturday night in a blaze that called for assistance from at least six surrounding towns.

The fire, deemed a likely accident by the Greenfield Fire Department, was reported by “several 911 calls” at around 8:15 p.m., according to Fire Chief Robert Strahan. The garage was “fully involved” upon firefighters’ arrival, leading them to strike a first alarm to call in mutual aid, Strahan said.

“Crews were able to quickly extinguish the fire. However, the garage is a complete loss,” he recapped.

Responding fire departments included Greenfield, South Deerfield, Turners Falls and Bernardston. Mutual aid was dismissed at around 9:45 p.m., while Greenfield firefighters left at around 11 p.m., Strahan recounted.

Firefighters from the Northfield and Deerfield departments provided station coverage and “responded to several routine calls in the city,” Strahan said. The Greenfield Police Department assisted with traffic control.

American Medical Response (AMR) responded and evaluated a firefighter who slipped and hit his head. According to Strahan, this was the night’s only injury.

Strahan said the “oversized one-car garage” contained no car at the time of the fire, but all of the garage’s contents — including equipment such as a riding lawnmower — were destroyed. A car that had been parked next to the garage sustained heavy fire damage.

One homeowner was believed to be home when the fire started, according to Strahan, but was not in the garage at the time of the incident. The house itself received no apparent or reported damage.

The incident remains under investigation.
