GREENFIELD — Tim Farrell has been named leader of Greenfield Community Energy and Technology for 2018.

The GCET Board of Commissioners named Farrell, who is also the president and co-owner of the Gilmore and Farrell Insurance Agency, its chairman of the board on Feb. 8.

“I am honored to serve as chair for this organization,” Farrell said in a statement. “This marks a new beginning for GCET and we will work with management to provide strong oversight to achieve our mission — providing fast, affordable internet to everyone in Greenfield.”

The members of the Board of Commissioners are appointed by the mayor to oversee the city’s municipal internet provider. The board meets on a monthly basis.

Farrell will work with the board in the areas of “financial performance, marketing and long-term strategic planning,” among others, according to the statement.

Farrell has held various local government positions over the past two decades, including ten years on the Greenfield Town Council, with two terms as its president and two years as chairman of the School Committee. He also had a four-year stint on the Selectboard.

In addition to Farrell, Jennifer Stromsten, project specialist with the Brattleboro Development Credit Corp., was named vice chair of the board. John Howland, president and CEO of Greenfield Savings Bank, was chosen as board secretary. Other board members include David Russell and David Lanoie.
