CONWAY — A friend of two residents displaced by a house fire last weekend has set up an online fundraiser.

“Anything you can donate to the cause will greatly help, and be hugely appreciated, as they will face many challenges over the next 12+ months,” Anya Jacobson wrote in the description for the fundraiser.

No injuries resulted from the blaze that significantly damaged a two-story house at 3014 Shelburne Falls Road on Saturday night, according to the home’s two residents, partners Misty Sluter and Colin Bargeron. The two, who were away from home when their neighbor noticed the fire and called 911, are staying with family, as their home is now uninhabitable.

The fire “destroyed their every belonging,” according to Jacobson.

“Coming home to a pile of ash ... was truly shocking,” Jacobson wrote. “My heart broke as they embraced each other in tears and began a truly inspiring wave of support for each other’s loss. … Both keep repeating, ‘It’s going to be OK, it’s just stuff,’ a reminder of their shared resilience.”

While local and state fire investigators determined that the fire began in the garage and spread from there, the exact cause will remain unconfirmed due to the extent of the damage, barring any new information, according to Jake Wark, a spokesperson for the state Department of Fire Services. Bargeron said he believes the fire was likely caused by a cordless battery charger in the garage, which completely burned down. Wark commented that “an electrical event is among the possible factors” and affirmed that the incident is not considered suspicious.

Both the garage and an abutting single-story portion of the house have been deemed a total loss by the Conway Fire Department, according to Capt. Chris Hermann. He said the house’s two-story main section suffered significant smoke and water damage.

Nobody was home at the time of the fire except for a kitten, which was rescued unharmed by the firefighters, and an adult cat, which escaped safely and later returned unharmed.

Bargeron, who said the property was insured, had just officially bought the house less than a month ago, despite having lived there for about 13 years with his former partner, who now lives in Texas. The house, which he said was built in the early 1800s, had been in her family’s possession for about 40 years. He and Sluter said they intend to repair the house and live there again, with Jacobson projecting repairs will take at least a year.

Those interested in donating to the couple can do so at gofund.me/0a11610c. As of Thursday afternoon, Jacobson has collected $3,780 toward her $10,000 goal.
