SOUTH DEERFIELD — Friday night and the lights are low, looking out for a place to go? Frontier Regional School has the answer, with its production of “Mamma Mia!”

Folks are invited to break out their summer clothes and prepare for a Greek vacation as “Mamma Mia!” premieres at Frontier on Friday, March 15, at 7 p.m. Additional performances are slated for Saturday, March 16, at 7 p.m. and Sunday, March 17, at 2 p.m.

Featuring numerous hits by ABBA, including “Gimme! Gimme! Gimme” and the previously referenced “Dancing Queen,” cast members said the audience is in for a entertaining show that is paced by its more-emotional moments.

“Even though it’s such a fun-loving show, I think we’ve also brought out the emotional moments as well, which has been so lovely,” said Patrice Moriarty, a senior who is playing Donna Sheridan. “Bring your tissues and bring your dancing shoes as well.”

Taking the other lead role of Donna’s daughter, Sophie Sheridan, is sophomore Sofia Hebert. Sophie invites three of her potential fathers to her wedding in Greece — all without telling her mother.

The real challenge, both leads said, was adapting roles that were made so famous on Broadway and then in the 2008 film that had a star-studded ensemble cast, including Meryl Streep, Amanda Seyfried and Pierce Bronsan.

“Meryl Streep is the GOAT; she is literally the greatest of all time, so it’s definitely hard,” Moriarty said. “I definitely had to think to myself, ‘This is the musical, whereas that’s more the movie,’ which is helpful because the musical has even more songs than the movie does, so that’s definitely helped me get into my version of Donna.”

“A lot of people connect with the movie and the musical,” Hebert added. “I’ve been best friends with Patrice forever, so it’s interesting to play the dynamic of a mother and daughter into our friendship, which is different from how Amanda Seyfried and Meryl Streep did in the movie and the second movie, and [seeing those dynamics] in other productions as well.”

Director Gian DiDonna said “Mamma Mia!” was the general choice among the theater crew last year and everyone involved in the production has some level of familiarity with it, which has them in a good position ahead of Friday’s premiere. Other faculty assisting in the production, which includes more than 30 student performers, technicians, musicians and volunteers, are Olivia Leone, Janet Ryan and Val Vorheis.

“I really like the show because I love the music. It’s really a fan-favorite, a lot of the school community is excited to see it,” DiDonna said. “It’s not a technically demanding show … and the kids know the songs.”

DiDonna highlighted the talents of Moriarty and Hebert as the two leads, but emphasized the strength of the cast, which includes students from seventh to 12th grade, from top to bottom.

“What’s really great about this cast is we have a whole new slew of people who are coming up through the ranks and establishing themselves, and it’s kind of nice to see the depths of the talent,” he said.

All of this combined talent comes together for an ensemble finale that Hebert said folks will love.

“I’m personally most excited for the end for many reasons. You’ll have to come and find out,” Hebert said. “I feel like it really brings all of us together and I’m really excited to see how the audience is going to react.”

Tickets, which are $10 for adults and $7 for seniors and students, can be purchased at the door. There will also be a raffle to support Frontier’s theater program.
