TURNERS FALLS — Expect a celebration of spring today in Turners Falls when the Franklin County Spring Parade and 5K Road Race roll through the area.

This is the seventh year for the event, which is held every spring in Montague.

The 5K begins at 11:30 a.m. in front of Turners Falls High School. Costumes are encouraged according to race coordinator Kelsey Cadran. The theme for the parade and the road race this year is Candyland.

The entry fee for the race $30 (cash or check) the day of the race and same day registration starts at 10 a.m. All proceeds will go to the Stone Soup Cafe in Greenfield this year. Cadran said costumes are encouraged and there will be a prize for the best one. Prizes will be awarded to the top three male and female finishers as well as top finishers for age brackets.

The parade starts at 1 p.m. in front of Sheffield Elementary. Michael Nelson, coordinator for the parade, said there are about 35 entries this year, which is on par with previous years. He said that registration for the parade is free and open to any community group. Those group’s interested in joining should arrive at the school around noon.

Nelson said that Cliff’s Backyard BBQ will be at Sheffield with lunch options.
