CHICOPEE — A former Federal Street School principal who is now living in Florida won $4 million in the Massachusetts Lottery while he was back in the state last month to meet his fourth grandchild.

James Devine, of Estero, Florida, purchased a “$4,000,000 Platinum Jackpot” scratch ticket at the Nouria convenience store at 2012 Memorial Drive in Chicopee in late February. According to the Massachusetts Lottery’s website, he chose the cash option and received a one-time payment of $2.6 million, before taxes.

He reportedly plans to use some of that money to buy a new golf cart to tour the Florida community where he and his wife live, according to the Massachusetts Lottery website.

The convenience store will receive a $40,000 bonus for its sale of this ticket.

Devine was principal of Federal Street School in Greenfield for seven years, departing in 2002 to become assistant superintendent of instruction and accountability in Chicopee. Before his job at Federal Street School, Devine spent 23 years in Holyoke schools, then worked in the South Hadley school system for two years.
