Five Franklin County schools were recognized by the state for their outstanding work in an environmental education program.
Greenfield High School, Federal Street School, Math and Science Academy, Bernardston Elementary School and Hawlemont Regional School in Charlemont were all honored by the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection for their efforts on the state’s “Green Team.”
In total 62 schools were awarded by the state out of the nearly 300 schools that participated across the commonwealth. A press release from the state said nearly 60,000 students were a part of the program.
Students learned about various activities, including recycling programs, collecting textiles for donation, composting, “idle-free zones” for school driveways, increasing energy efficiency and reducing carbon footprints.
“We are fortunate to live in a state with many wonderful natural resources, and the students of today will be the stewards of tomorrow,” said MassDEP Commissioner Martin Suuberg. “Each year, we are proud to recognize those Massachusetts schools, students and teachers who participate in the Green Team experience, and are working to have a positive impact on our environment.”
