MONTAGUE CENTER — Inspired to further its community outreach, the First Congregational Church of Montague started a summer concert series eight years ago.

“It’s a nice, no-cost event in town and you don’t have to be a member of the church to join it,” noted concert series organizer and church member Lu Anne Herrick. “So it seemed like a win-win for everyone.”

That series continues this July, with the 4 North St. church hosting a concert each Wednesday night from 6 to 7 p.m. starting July 10. The lineup features Becky & John on July 10, the Falltown String Band on July 17, Dusti Dufresne on July 23 and Just Fine Thank You on July 31.

The July 31 show marks Just Fine Thank You’s second time performing in the church’s Wednesday night concert series. The band is made up of western Massachusetts natives Robin Hoffman, Becky Lang and Dave Pratt. According to the band’s website, the trio performs genres such as country, jazz and punk rock in what members call a “ukulele-driven exploration of different genres with a mischievous touch.”

Hoffman said the First Congregational Church’s concert series is one that the members of Just Fine Thank You look forward to.

“We played last summer, and we also played this event a couple of times in a previous band that the three of us were in,” Hoffman recounted.

In previous years when the band has played, Hoffman said more than 70 people attended.

“The crowd’s reaction to our repertoire is surprise and delight most of the time,” Hoffman said, noting that she and her bandmates play covers of songs from across genres that she enjoys for the freedom it gives them as a string band with a ukulele at the forefront. “We feel like the use of ukuleles is a license to do anything we want and make it our own.”

The Farley String Band will also be returning this year with the same large ensemble string band, playing many traditional folk and fiddle tunes. Member Robert Lord said the band incorporates banjo, rhythm bones, a hammered dulcimer and other traditional folk instruments.

“We get a good response,” Lord said about the crowds’ reactions during the church concert series. “I think the type of music we play — the old time, jigs and reels — just really seems to appeal to people in that town.”

Lord said he is looking forward to returning to the concert series with the Farley String Band, and hopes for “good playing weather.”

“Weather-wise, that’s the first thing I’m hoping for, that it’ll be beautiful, nice playing and nice listening weather,” Lord expressed.

The concert series will be held rain or shine. Events in fair weather will be held on the common in front of the First Congregational Church of Montague, and the shows will be moved inside the church if the weather is expected to be poor, according to Herrick. Attendees are encouraged to bring their own seating to events on the common.
