MONTGOMERY — The state’s firefighting community is paying its final respects to the fire chief of a small Massachusetts town who died in the line of duty.

Calling hours for Montgomery Chief Stephen Frye are scheduled for Sunday afternoon at the Firtion-Adams Funeral home in Westfield.

A funeral Mass is planned for Monday morning at Our Lady of the Blessed Sacrament Church in Westfield, followed by burial at Montgomery Cemetery.

The 59-year-old Frye collapsed while dousing a house fire late Tuesday and died at the hospital. He had been with the department since 1993 and had been chief for 13 years. He is survived by his wife, Laurie, and two grown children.

He’s described in his obituary as “an adoring husband, amazing father, wonderful brother, gifted grill master and true friend to many.”
