After defeating Minnechaug on Tuesday, the Greenfield High School field hockey team put its unbeaten record on the line against the other top Division I squad in western Mass. on Thursday.

Longmeadow paid a visit to Veterans Memorial Field in Greenfield and Ashley Baron scored three first-half goals to pace the Lancers to a 4-0 victory over the Green Wave in independent action.

Baron scored 1 minute, 24 seconds into the game and then added goals with 9:42 and 2:53 to play in the first half as the visitors built a huge lead. Sophie Levenson scored in the second half on an assist from Baron, and Ellie Michon had one assist.

Greenfield coach Erin Thayer said that she wasn’t so much upset that her team suffered its first loss of the season, as much as in the way she felt her players gave up.

“It’s disappointing that we lost our fight. Disappointing that we didn’t fight through adversity,” she said. “We talked about rising to challenges this season and we have to some degree. But this was definitely our biggest challenge and we didn’t rise to it. Hopefully, we will learn, move on to tomorrow, learn from our mistakes and keep getting better.”

Gabrielle Aquista made three saves for the shutout. Samantha Smith turned aside 20 shots in the Green Wave net.

Agawam 2, Frontier 1 — Agawam scored once in each half to get past Frontier, 2-1, in independent field hockey action Thursday in Agawam.

Emily Oliver scored an unassisted goal with 13:53 left in the first half, and Emma Thompson made it 2-0 midway through the second half on an assist from Brook Szafran.

Frontier finally got on the board with 40 seconds to play as Emily DeMaio scored on an assist from Olivia Vecellio.

“We just played flat,” Frontier coach Missy Mahar said. “We had no sense of urgency.”

Nikki Bates made five saves in the win, while Skyla Burniske stopped seven shots in the loss.

Mohawk 8, FC Tech 0 — Caitlin Johnston scored three times and Tess Rancourt tallied twice for the second day in a row to help Mohawk pick up an 8-0 win over Franklin Tech Thursday in an independent field hockey game in Buckland.

Mohawk (6-5), which moved above the .500 mark with the victory, led just 2-0 at halftime before exploding for six goals in the second half.

Mya Lesieur had a goal and an assist for the Warriors. Shelby Sinistore and Sydney Taylor also had goals to help the cause, with Johnston, Taylor Williams and Abby Sinistore notching assists.

Kylee Baleno recorded 17 saves in net for Franklin Tech (0-7).

Turners 1, Belchertown 0 — Cassidhe Wozniak potted the lone goal of the game with 3:38 remaining before halftime, and host Turners Falls held off a feisty effort from Belchertown in a 1-0 independent victory Thursday at the Bourdeau Fields Complex in Turners.

Wozniak’s goal came with an assist from Amber Taylor. Belchertown actually held an 11-10 edge in shots on goal, though goalkeeper Haleigh Greene made 11 saves to preserve the shutout for Turners (8-2).

“Haleigh Greene played a really good game,” Turners coach Becky Dame said. “The girls played hard.”

Paige Sulda keyed the Powertown charge with a big game out of the midfield.

Turners has a difficult challenge when it hosts Frontier today at 3:30.
