A three-way race among Republicans for a U.S. Senate seat is the only contest on the state primary ballot Sept. 3, with Democratic ballots featuring candidates but no contests and Libertarian ballots having no nominees.

With mail-in ballots already out to voters and early in-person voting to commence across the state on Saturday, Aug. 24, most voters throughout Franklin County and the North Quabbin, unless participating in the GOP state primary, will not have any electoral decisions to make.

On the Republican ballot, Robert Antonellis of Medford, Ian Cain of Quincy and John Deaton of Swansea are competing for the U.S. Senate nomination to face off against incumbent Democratic Sen. Elizabeth Warren at the presidential election in November.

Warren, like all other Democrats on the ballot locally, is running unopposed in the primary.

In addition to Warren, all Democratic ballots in the region list incumbent Governor’s Councilor Tara Jacobs, who is vying for another term.

The Democratic ballots will feature U.S. Rep. James McGovern on ballots in the 2nd District communities, which includes every Franklin County town east of Charlemont, as well as the North Quabbin communities of Athol, Petersham, Phillipston and Royalston. In the 1st District, U.S. Rep. Richard Neal will appear on ballots in Charlemont, Monroe and Rowe.

Democratic ballots in Franklin County will feature Benjamin Simanski running for the clerk of courts to succeed Susan Emond, who is retiring and not seeking reelection. Meanwhile, incumbent Register of Deeds Scott Cote is seeking reelection.

Incumbent state Sen. Jo Comerford, D-Northampton, is on the ballots in the Hampshire, Franklin and Worcester District, which includes Greenfield, Bernardston, Deerfield, Erving, Gill, Leverett, Leyden, Montague, New Salem, Northfield, Orange, Shutesbury, Sunderland, Warwick and Wendell.

Incumbent state Sen. Paul Mark, D-Becket, is on the ballots in the Berkshire, Hampden, Franklin and Hampshire District, which includes Ashfield, Buckland, Charlemont, Colrain, Conway, Hawley, Heath, Monroe, Rowe, Shelburne and Whately. The only Republican on the ballot for state Senate is David Rosa, in the Berkshire, Hampden, Franklin and Hampshire District. He would challenge Mark.

State representatives

For state representatives, incumbent state Rep. Natalie Blais, D-Deerfield, is on the ballots in the 1st Franklin District, which includes Deerfield, Leverett, Sunderland and Whately.

For voters participating in the Republican primary in the 2nd Franklin District, which includes Athol, Erving, Gill, five precincts in Greenfield, Northfield, Orange, Phillipston, Royalston and Warwick, Jeffrey Raymond will appear on the ballot. Incumbent Susannah Whipps is registered as an Independent and will not appear on ballots until November.

In the 7th Hampden District, which includes Petersham, New Salem, Shutesbury and Wendell, incumbent Rep. Aaron Saunders is seeking reelection.

The Republican ballot has no U.S. House candidates attempting to take on either Neal or McGovern in the November election, or any Governor’s Council candidate to challenge Jacobs.

In Franklin and Worcester counties, there also are no Republican candidates for clerk of courts or register of deeds.

Saturday, Aug. 24, is the last day to register to vote in the state primary.
