Sunday will be one of the hardest days of the year for me, as it has been for the past 16 years. It’s Father’s Day. My dad, Wayne Campbell, passed away when he was young, 16 years ago, leaving my mother a widow and me and my four brothers and sister without our dad. He was, truly, a hands-on father who was always involved in our lives as a mentor, leader, teacher and wonderful provider.

I was 36 years old when my father died, a short time before my youngest brother was to be married to his now-wife, in April of 2003.

They now have four children. Their oldest was only 1½ at the time my father passed.

At the time, I had three children of my own. It was a very difficult time for them because they were very close to their papa. Now 16 years later, with my fifth grandchild on the way this summer, I understand everything my dad missed — they all grow up so fast. My father would have been so proud of his nine grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

My mother, Barbara Campbell, is a very strong woman. She has, in a way, taken over dad’s role in our lives — she is always there for my siblings and I, and our children.

I definitely wish my dad was still here. At the same time, I know that I’m very fortunate to have a mother who understands the importance of family and shows us what a true leader is.

As I celebrate another Father’s Day on Sunday with my siblings and our children, I realize how blessed I am to be here to share it with family.

To my father, I say ‘thank you’ for everything you did to make me a better person and the father I am today. I wish you were still here with us, physically. I love you, dad, very much and so does your family and the kids who never met you personally. They have heard stories and have seen many pictures of you. Your legacy will live in our hearts and minds.

To all who are celebrating Father’s Day, cheers to many years of happiness and memories together.
