1 dead, 2 injured following Route 2 head-on collision in Greenfield

GREENFIELD — One person was killed and two others were airlifted to hospitals following a head-on collision on the Route 2 bypass between Exit 27 and Adams Road in Greenfield on Sunday evening.

A Ford Explorer crossed the centerline into the westbound lane near the 51.6 mile-marker and struck a Toyota Yaris shortly before 6:30 p.m., according to Mary Carey, spokesperson for the Northwestern District Attorney’s Office. The impact killed the Toyota driver, a 41-year-old Acton man, and a dog that was in the vehicle.

The operator of the Ford Explorer and a passenger were transported to the hospital with serious injuries.

Greenfield Fire Chief Robert Strahan said one patient was taken to Baystate Medical Center in Springfield and the other was flown to UMass Memorial Medical Center in Worcester.

According to Carey, respondents to the scene included the Greenfield Police Department, Massachusetts State Police Detective Unit attached to the District Attorney’s Office, State Police Crime Scene Services and State Police Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Section.

The crash investigation is ongoing. According to Carey, no charges or citations have been issued at this time.
