SHELBURNE FALLS – Named one of the five “Great Places” in America this year by the American Planning Association, Shelburne Falls will be celebrating its accolade with a party on Thursday, Oct. 18, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Shelburne-Buckland Community Center, 53 Main St.

Hosted by the Shelburne Falls Partnership, the event is open to “anyone who loves Shelburne Falls,” according to the Greater Shelburne Falls Area Business Association.

This event will include refreshments, live music and decorations by local artists, as well as displays by the area businesses, nonprofit groups and others that help make Shelburne Falls a special place. The Village Information Center will show a video of the village, and several local, state and federal officials will attend.

A ceremony for the award acceptance will be hosted by John Mullin, a professor in the University of Massachusetts’ Landscape Architecture and Regional Planning Department. He is also associate director for the Center for Economic Development at UMass.

State Rep. Stephen D. Kulik, who has represented the village’s two towns – Buckland and Shelburne – will moderate the event. He has served the region for 25 years, and will be leaving office in January.

Those who come may stay after the ceremony to visit with friends and neighbors and to share stories of Shelburne Falls.

To help the Business Association plan for how many are attending, call 413-625-2526 or email with your name, phone number and number of people coming.

The award recognizes places and neighborhoods in the United States that demonstrate exceptional character, quality and planning that enriches communities, economic growth and inspires other communities around the country.
