ERVING — Erving School Union 28 Superintendent Jennifer Culkeen is back on the job following a month-long leave that began June 2, the day after she abruptly walked out of a School Committee meeting during a discussion about student discipline.

Culkeen was absent under the provisions of the Family and Medical Leave Act of 1993 and was back to work on July 1, according to School Committee Chair Mackensey Bailey. The superintendent was not present at Thursday’s School Committee meeting, though no reason was given. Her absence had previously been described as an “approved leave.”

Efforts to reach Culkeen on Friday were unsuccessful.

Bailey said Culkeen ultimately has the authority to hire an interim principal to replace Lisa Candito, who resigned in a letter dated June 16, following an administrative leave that lasted more than a month. According to Bailey, a steering committee to find Candito’s replacement has not yet been formed.
