ERVING — Senior & Community Center Director Paula Betters remembers the center’s annual Halloween costume contest and lunch as a much-anticipated day full of joking and laughter.

But this year, to accommodate the health safety guidelines put in place amid the lasting COVID-19 pandemic that has kept the town’s seniors at home, Betters went back to the drawing board.

“I do not want to forget these fun-loving seniors who looked forward to our day of kooky celebration,” she said.

Instead, when it came time to hand out the monthly meals for October, Betters and Becky Paciorek of the Community Outreach Program at the Franklin County Sheriff’s Department were prepared with Halloween-themed goodie bags and cupcakes.

“This is really for the seniors,” Betters said of the treats during Thursday’s distribution. “Halloween is for kids, but (seniors) need to have fun, too.”

Erving residents who stopped by the Senior & Community Center on Thursday received a bag of food with a double serving of loaded potato, chicken, broccoli and cheese casserole, complete with heating instructions. Meals were also delivered to seniors without transportation to the center. Betters and Paciorek — who prepare the meals as well as distribute them — made enough for 50 double meals.

The center doesn’t charge for the meals, but does accept donations to help keep the program running.

The next lunch is on Thursday, Nov. 19, and will consist of turkey, gravy, baked sweet potato, green bean casserole, cranberry sauce and a homemade dessert. The meal is available to Erving residents, but they must call to reserve one at 413-423-3649
