CHARLEMONT — Anyone who lived through Tropical Storm Irene in 2011 understands how destructive a massive flood can be, and so the Massachusetts National Guard is hosting joint civil/military exercises this week in Charlemont and in several other communities throughout the state.

Vigilant Guard, held once every five years in the state, is a full-scale, civil-military exercise,  with 46 federal, state, local and civilian groups participating. In Charlemont, the focus is on emergency response during a future flooding event — a hypothetical dam breach impacting the Deerfield River.

The practice drills include emergency notifications, exercises at Greenfield Community College, and rescue teams in the Deerfield River and surrounding forests, from Sherman Dam in Rowe to to the Zoar Gap.

Local emergency responders from the Northwest Massachusetts Incident Management Team are participating.
