GREENFIELD — No injuries resulted from an early-morning fire that destroyed a woodshed and garage at 189 South Shelburne Road.

Homeowner Clayton Davenport, who lives in the house with his wife, Jennifer, said he was awoken by the blaze at roughly 3:15 a.m. Tuesday, when he “saw a big orange ball out back” and “a neighbor was pounding on the door” to notify them. He said the Greenfield Fire Department responded quickly and saved a bigger barn on the property.

“It could have been a lot worse,” Davenport said. “They did a great job.”

Greenfield Fire Capt. Alex Cooley said his department received a call about a heater on fire and responded with two engines, though additional vehicles were sent later. He said firefighters arrived to find a garage fully engulfed in flames as well as a woodshed and snowmobile trailer on fire.

“They were able to contain the fire to the involved exposures (and) keep it from spreading to any additional exposures that were nearby,” Cooley said.

He said the fire was deemed under control at 5:10 a.m. and the final unit cleared the scene at 8:30.

“They were able to quickly knock it down, stop it in its tracks and prevent any further damage,” Cooley said.

Although the call initially referenced a heater on fire, the captain said the exact cause of the fire is under investigation by the Office of the State Fire Marshal, and one of his department’s fire investigators assisted.

Greenfield was assisted by firefighters from the Bernardston, Deerfield, Shelburne Falls, South Deerfield and Turners Falls departments, as well as AMR ambulance.
