COLRAIN — Following brake failure, a dump truck hauling a small Bobcat excavator on a trailer drove off of Greenfield Road at the bottom of the hill leading into the center of town Wednesday morning, closing the road.

Colrain Fire Chief Nick Anzuoni said the driver, the sole occupant of the dump truck, had been traveling from Wilbraham on his way to a job, and was walking around by the time first responders arrived on scene at around 10:30 a.m. The man was taken to the Colrain Fire Station to make phone calls and to be evaluated by medical personnel.

“I think he ditched it,” Anzuoni added. “I called the DEP (state Department of Environmental Protection) because he landed in a stream and we can smell leaking fluids.”

The stream feeds into the North River.

Colrain Police Officer James Hunkler confirmed that the driver had lost his brakes on the dump truck and was trying to slow it down by driving off the right side of the steep road. Tracks left by the vehicle show where it left the road and struck a speed limit sign, narrowly missing a utility pole, before hitting a large tree and landing in the brook.

Hunkler said Greenfield Road will be closed for at least a couple of hours as Rose Ledge Companies of Erving was called in to remove the dump truck, trailer and excavator.

The steep hill on Greenfield Road, marked with warning signs of a 5 to 11 percent grade change, has been the site of numerous accidents over the years, some of which have involved vehicles striking buildings in the center of town where the road intersects with Route 112.
