GREENFIELD — Now that COVID-19 case numbers have decreased locally, the St. Andrew’s Guild has revived its weekly in-person sewing and knitting groups.
The group meets every Tuesday from 9 a.m. to noon in the Whiteman Room, located behind the function hall at the Episcopal Church of Saints James and Andrew at 8 Church St. New participants are welcome.
The group has both experienced participants and beginners who learn from each other in a social setting. Organizer Kathryn Aubry-McAvoy said experienced stitchers often work on their own projects while helping others learn, adding that one of the goals is to do community service.
This week, Aubry-McAvoy was cutting out fabric for sleep sacks for babies while Cindy Gwosch was seated at one of the sewing machines stitching them together. The sleep sacks are destined for the Montague Catholic Social Ministries in Turners Falls.
Across the table, Bill Strader was getting help from Diane Kurkulonis to cut denim patches using a rolling cutter. Strader, a former teacher, had several pairs of blue jeans that needed patching. Nearby, Terri Kerner was making a set of custom curtains cut from swaths of fabric.
