GREENFIELD — A crash along Interstate 91 northbound near Exit 43 on Friday evening, caused by a vehicle being driven the wrong way, sent the car’s driver and a police officer to an area hospital, State Police Trooper Brandon Doherty confirmed on Monday.

The Shelburne Falls State Police barracks received “multiple calls of a wrong-way vehicle traveling south in the northbound lanes” at around 5:33 p.m. on Friday, according to Doherty’s statement.

“The vehicle, a 2020 Honda Accord, was traveling at a high rate of speed and nearly caused several vehicle crashes,” Doherty wrote.

Despite attempts by state troopers to stop the driver, the car continued, he said.

“A trooper was able to get a visual on the vehicle and crossed the median to attempt to get the vehicle to stop,” Doherty wrote. “The Accord struck the trooper’s cruiser and came to a stop.”

The state Department of Transportation took to social media to report the wrong-way crash, which temporarily closed Interstate 91 northbound. MassDOT advised drivers to seek an alternative route. According to Doherty, the crash occurred near mile marker 50.

The driver — whose name has not been released at this time — will face charges relating to the incident, although Doherty wrote “at the moment we do not have the specific info on those.”

Friday’s incident remains under investigation and Doherty said State Police will provide updates as they become available.
