SOUTH DEERFIELD — An international foods market will soon move into The Tibetan Plaza, filling a niche locally and an empty storefront on Routes 5 and 10.

“People should have more choice,” said Sonam Rinchen, who owns the Greenfield Road plaza along with his wife, Tenzin Rinchen. Both are originally from Tibet, and are ready to begin a new business endeavor.

Together, they’re working on plans to open Deerfield’s International Market (and Local Produce) in the coming months, hoping to capitalize on the substantial number of Russian and Moldovan immigrants in the area, according to Sonam Rinchen.

To that end, the market will stock a variety of international offerings, including hard-to-get Russian products, like buckwheat and various canned goods.

Tenzin Rinchen will officially own the market.

Elsewhere in the plaza — which they purchased 2004 and finished building in 2007 — the couple also owns a Tibetan bed-and-breakfast.

“We’re working hard,” Sonam Rinchen said. Previously, the space had been a bakery and coffee shop, but it closed down about two years ago.

Since then, Sonam Rinchen said a few businesses nearly moved into the space, but plans fell through. The idea to open the market took root about a year and a half ago because there aren’t many other stores exclusively selling international foods in the region. The nearest store that stocks Asian or Russian food is in West Springfield, Sonam Rinchen said.

For more information, the store can be reached at 413-800-0008.
