DEERFIELD – Deerfield Academy’s recently opened athletics complex is expected to have a new neighbor by next summer.
Construction on a state-of-the-art Health & Wellness Center began in June and is expected to be completed by June 2019.
According to Deerfield Academy, the new 23,000-square-foot facility will include a medical clinic, 16-bed infirmary, classroom space, meeting rooms, counseling offices, student mailboxes, student laundry, and shipping and receiving services. The center, designed by Architectural Resources Cambridge, is expected to enable the school to address emotional health, pace of school life, stress management, and nutrition.
The current Health Center — an accredited hospital facility designed by the architecture firm William & Geoffrey Platt of New York City — was completed in 1948. According to the academy’s website, medical services are handled by a full-time physician and nurse practitioner and by registered nurses who are on duty around the clock. The Health Center has a 10-bed inpatient facility and an outpatient clinic. Counseling services are in the Health Center’s basement. According to the academy’s website, two doctorate-level counselors on staff provide individual counseling, and a psychiatrist visits each week to see students in the counseling office.
