TURNERS FALLS — A boy was airlifted to Baystate Medical Center in Springfield on Tuesday after being hit by a truck while riding his bicycle on Millers Falls Road.

Emergency responders were dispatched to the area of Millers Falls Road near the intersection of Unity Street and Turners Falls Road shortly before 3:30 p.m. The vehicle that struck the cyclist, a white Chevrolet commercial truck carrying brush and towing a trailer, appeared to have left skid marks on the road as the driver tried to stop in the area of a crosswalk. The truck remained parked with the bicycle still underneath its front bumper as police investigated.

Responding agencies included the Montague Police Department, Turners Falls Fire Department ambulance and American Medical Response (AMR). The Gill and Erving Police departments assisted with traffic control, detouring vehicles via Turners Falls Road and Henry Avenue while the road was closed for investigation. The State Police Collision Analysis & Reconstruction Section (CARS) arrived later and assisted the Montague Police Department with the investigation.

Koch’s Automotive towed the truck shortly before 6 p.m., at which time police reopened Millers Falls Road and left the scene. State Police deferred questions to the Northwestern District Attorney’s Office.

Laurie Loisel, spokesperson for the DA’s office, was unable to provide an update on the boy’s condition as of press time. She noted no charges have been filed as the investigation continues.

This story will be updated as more information becomes available.
