HEATH — Colrain Fire Chief Nicholas Anzuoni has been hired by the Selectboard to serve as Heath’s interim fire chief from January through June 30.

Anzuoni, a Colrain resident, has been fire chief in his hometown since 2010, although he has served on the Colrain Fire Department since 1996.

Anzuoni estimates he will be working four to six hours per week in Heath, developing the department’s budget for the coming fiscal year, working on firefighter training and “a host of issues facing small fire departments.”

“I think this buys them another six months to think things over for the long term,” Anzuoni said.

Anzuoni will replace Fire Chief Ken Gilbert, who, at age 68, wanted to step down from that role with the department.

Anzuoni said there are not enough young people coming into the field to fill in the gaps in volunteer fire departments. With so much training required, he said, many would-be volunteer firefighters opt instead to seek full-time, career jobs in firefighting.
